In three years of study and travel, he covered over 4,000 miles in Northwest China and Mongolia, across the Gobi Desert, and down the Yellow River, immersing himself in grassroots contact with the language and people. Upon his return to the United States, DeFrancis earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He taught at several institutions nationwide. Excellent dictionary I was so pleased to find another dictionary by John DeFrancis and I am not disappointed. It is unusual to find a small dictionary giving access to find words by stroke order; this is usually reserved for larger books. It is clear to read and gives examples of useage. The radical index at the back is a much larger font, making searching easier.I have had a DeFrancis pocket Chinese-English dictionary for more than 15 years and it is still my favourite 'go to' book when finding words that are not in other small dictionaries.My only problem was some of the English R pages were out of place in the print run. I can live with that! Excellent for those with good sight
